The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management is 53 years young, and we have begun another academic year. With 81 interns, residents, and fellows, one-hundred seven faculty, 35 CRNAs, 52 classified staff, and one post-doctoral research fellow, this Department is one of the largest academic anesthesiology departments in the nation.

I am pleased to announce that the UT Southwestern Anesthesiology Chair Search Committee has selected Charles W. “Chuck” Whitten, M.D., as the finalist for the permanent Chair.  Chuck has accepted this position and we wish him the greatest success.

The Department provides anesthesia services at one hundred twenty-two locations on a daily basis.  We provide night time anesthesia call coverage at 11 different locations every night.  The Department will provide over 65,000 anesthetics this coming year. There seems to be no limit on the expanding need for anesthesia services.  If you haven’t done so, please check the Department’s web site at www.utswanesthesia.com.  The web site continues to be refined with expanded fellow, medical student and residency education opportunities, which include PBLDs, Q&As, introductory lecture series for CA1s (Vapor Camp Lecture Series), journal club, grand rounds, and mock oral board examinations.

The 2008 ASA Annual Meeting will be held in Orlando, Florida, October 17, 2008. The 13th Annual Jenkins Alumni Society Reception and Reunion will be held on Saturday this year, instead of a Sunday.  We are opting for a more casual environment.  The reunion will be held at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.  Please mark your calendar for Saturday, October 18, 2008, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Please see the enclosed flyer for details.
