Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Fellowship | Print |

The Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship at UT Southwestern is a comprehensive 12-month specialized training experience that can be tailored to meet the individual’s training goals. The fellows have access to a variety of clinical settings ranging from a University hospital to a private institution, children’s medical center and veterans affairs hospital. The caseloads at these hospitals exceeds 3,500 cases annually and includes a wide variety of adult cardiac, heart and lung transplantation, child and adult congenital surgical procedures.

PRIMARY TRAINING HOSPITAL:

  • St Paul University Hospital

Affiliated Training Hospitals:

  • Baylor University Medical Center
  • Dallas VA Medical Center
  • Children’s Medical Center Dallas

CLINICAL OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE:

  • 550 Adult Cardiac Cases requiring CPB 50% CABG; 30% Valves; 5% adult Congenital; 15% other
  • 30 Adult Heart, Lung and Heart-Lung Transplantations
  • 20 Deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA), LVADs
  • 500 Major Thoracic cases
  • 80 Thoracic aorta cases

TRANSESOPHAGEAL ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY (TEE) EXPERIENCE:

  • 90% of cardiac cases have TEE exams performed
  • All cardiac rooms equipped with Philip’s machines including 3D TEE
  • Xcelera digital archiving and reporting systems
  • 1 month rotation with Cardiology

EXPOSURE TO STATE-OF–THE-ART MONITORING TECHNOLOGY:

  • Sonosite for ultrasound-guided vascular access
  • Cerebral oximetry (INVOS 5100)
  • LiDCO (continuous CO, systolic pressure variability)
  • Intrathecal pressure monitoring and CSF drainage (“spinal drains”)
  • “Real-time” Thromboelastrography (TEG) in operating room

EDUCATIONAL/RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE:

  • Weekly conferences (TEE interesting case, grand rounds, journal club)
  • Funding for educational material and ALL poster presentations with Chair’s approval
  • Mentored projects (SCA Newsletter, A&A, ECHO Rounds, Case Reports)

PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE:

  • All CT faculty are Diplomates of the National Board of Echocardiography
  • 10 publications/presentations co-authored by CT Fellows over past 3yrs

ADDITIONAL PROGRAM DETAILS:

  • 3 months of electives (pediatric hearts, echo, ICU, clinical research)
  • Non-clinical time available as needed
